Chapter 14
I jerked awake, sitting bolt upright on the couch, my clothes sticking to my skin. Gah! I must have run a fever during the night and sweated. I couldn’t believe I slept all night and didn’t stir once.
My feet were still bound in gauze so, I unwrapped them. There was blood on the inside of the binding, but my feet looked as though the cuts had had a week to heal. I bit my lip and put my weight on them. Nothing. Not even a twinge of pain. I threw the gauze into the trashcan and washed in the shower.
The memory of yesterday with the prowler flooded me along with the hot water splashing over me. But in this morning light, it seemed like some of it had to be stress and alcohol induced. And whatever Barney had given me affected me way more than vodka did. My stomach growled. I was so hungry that if I had a box of pizza nearby, I’d bring it into the shower with me.
Quickly, I finished and dressed in a pair of black jeans and a crimson top. I braided my still wet black hair down my back. Checking my cell, I gulped at the time. Ten thirty. No wonder I was famished. I hadn’t eaten since yesterday at Barney’s.
In the kitchen, I scrambled three eggs and added cheese to the sizzling mixture. While I waited for my breakfast to cook, I smeared jelly over bread, not even bothering to toast it. I had two more pieces before the eggs were done and devoured them, as well.
I cracked open a bottle of water and sat down in front of my computer. Emails and internet social sites took me an hour to get through. My phone beeped with a message.
Hey, beautiful. It’s Scott. You up for a carnival? There’s one this Saturday.
I typed in my reply despite the heaviness in my chest. He didn’t deserve to hear about my grief. Sounds amazing, but I’ll have to pass this time. I’ve got the memorial service lined up for Friday and would really like you to come with me if you’re able?
He responded. Send me the dets.
Copying the information from the email confirming my order, I sent him the address and time.
Then I typed an email to my college professors about suspending my classes until the fall. Hopefully, by then, I could get back into things, but the idea of studying or even trying to focus on anything felt like swimming in quicksand.
A beep sounded on my cell again and smiled thinking it was Scott.
How dare you not let your parents and brother rest in peace!
The words hit me between the eyes. I gasped in surprise. Was this a prank? I checked the number but it was unlisted.
Who is this? I typed in.
No response. I stood, pacing, staring at the screen on my phone. Nothing. I texted back a hello but received an error message.
What the holy hell? I rushed to my laptop and typed in the phone number.
